Short Description:

Whether you are actively involved in talks about a merger, or want to arm yourself with knowledge for future possibilities, this webinar will provide you with tools, resources, and framework from which to approach the merger of community mediation centers.

 

Many mediation center have been hard hit by changing economic conditions. One approach for community mediation centers to adapt to the new economy is to merge multiple centers into one. Merging is fraught with logistical, financial, human resources, and emotional concerns. This webinar will address common merger stumbling blocks and strategies to ensure success.

The presenters will draw from research on successful nonprofit mergers as well as first-hand experience with merging three mediation centers to give participants a broad view of the components of a successful merger.



Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn about the common stumbling blocks in mergers and how to avoid them.


2. Participants will learn about the components of a successful merger, and how to ensure these pieces are in place.


3. Participants explore the emotional side of mergers, and how conflict resolution professionals involved in a merger can move stakeholders through the process while honor all viewpoints.


 

Presenter's Bios:

Laura Jeffords, B.A, MPA, is the Executive Director of the Mediation Center which serves four counties in the Asheville area of Western North Carolina. During her nine years with the Mediation Center, she has led the organization through several levels of expansion and growth, including a merger with two other community mediation center. Laura has served as member of the board of directors for the National Association for Community Mediation since 2012. She is also a member of the board of directors for the Mediation Network of North Carolina, and the Community Resource Council of the Swannanoa Women’s Correctional Center. As an adjunct facility member in the Western Carolina University Masters in Public Administration program teaching Nonprofit Leadership and Sustainability, she has taught current and future community leaders how to lead effectively in the face of conflicting demands and limited resources while striving for excellent stewardship and a full commitment to results-based work.

  

 

Neil Calvert, B.S, MPA, is a business analyst with 10 years of experience in service management, service design, customer relationship management, team-building, business analysis and problem solving and both he public and private sectors. Neil receive completed his Master’s in Public Administration at

Western Carolina University where he was the 2014 MPA student of the year. In the spring of 2014, Neil completed research about best practices in nonprofit mergers. He is currently on staff at Western Carolina University where he collaborates on IT-related projects with faculty and staff campus-wide. As a project manager and computer expert, he implements complex projects through work-flow diagramming, data analysis, and report preparation for executive leaders.
