FACILITATION SKILLS FOR MEDIATORS

Facilitating a meeting to a successful outcome is a challenge. As the guardian of the process, a
facilitator must provide an opportunity for meaningful participation by those who attend a
meeting, often when there are strong feelings and opposing viewpoints among the participants.
At the same time, the meeting facilitator must accomplish the purpose of the meeting and
realize the goals set by the meeting organizer. Successfully completing this task requires
understanding your role as facilitator. You need to learn how to plan for the meeting and then
how to utilize your tools such as ground rules and communication skills during the meeting to
ensure the outcomes desired for the meeting. You must also maintain neutrality and remain
within the other limits on your facilitator role.

This class will prepare you to confidentially play a facilitation role for community meetings and
other public events that typically utilize Project Sentinel facilitators.

You will learn the methods, structure, skills and tools to be available to you in every facilitation
