Advocacy for State Funding and Support Mechanisms

NAFCM is committed to expanding statewide funding and support mechanisms for community mediation as a critical strategy for institutionalization of the field. With support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, NAFCM has created an information and policy booklet providing a directory of states with funding support mechanisms for community mediation. NAFCM will continue to disseminate the booklet widely, among state and local policy makers and community mediation centers. The goal of this project is to promote the creation of statewide support mechanisms. No other national organization has assumed the role of advocator for community mediation support nationally. NAFCM will work with organizations that have assumed this role on a state level.

Activities include:

• Dissemination of policy booklet and information on the benefits of community mediation;
• Work with legislative staff to develop strategies that work to gain the support of state legislators;
• Provide tools for centers, state community mediation associations and coalitions to work with each other and to develop relationships with state legislators to develop a state funding mechanism;
• Provide technical assistance to these state groups on statewide collaborative process and the development of wide support mechanisms;
• Technical assistance provided by direct peer to peer learning and regional training institutes;
• Presentations at conferences, symposium for state policy makers on community mediation and why it is critical to support it.
