POWER MONDAYS Peace Talks are free sessions open to the public where participants explore and practice communication techniques to strengthen dialogues at home, work and/or school. Each month a facilitator leads participants in a short learning segment demonstrating a communication tool then participants engage in an interactive practice demonstrating the learned technique.

This project is supported by a Beyond The Table grant from Central Carolina Community Foundation and was inspired by the "On The Table" initiative.

1. Effective Listening Skills - Learning to hear and not to respond; practice RASA technique of listening (Receive the message, Appreciate why it was spoken, Summarize what was heard by heart and mind, and Ask for clarification on anything not fully understood); and empathy listening.

2. Understanding and Valuing Differences - Learning to hear individuals through their diversity and differences are difficult however an intentional effort to hear and respond with their differences in consideration shifts many conversations.

3. Saying How It Is From MY Side - Learning the effective use of "I" statements.

4. Power In Communication - Learning the advantages and disadvantages of our use of power in communication. Participants consider ways to harness and to use power effectively and not at the expense of others.

5. Willingness To Resolve Conflicts - Learning that there are times when we don't want to resolve our conflicts; it could be because of past hurt, a need to be right, or a desire to get revenge. Participants examine how projection impacts our communication skills.
