NAFCM Members,

Over the last few decades the field of alternative dispute resolution has grown tremendously. There has been recognition that not all cases are well-suited for the adversarial process and that community mediation services is just one path to justice. The legislative checklist was developed as a resource for the NAFCM membership. The checklist is a process guide designed to provide local centers with resource information which would assist their organizations in becoming stronger, skillful and effective legislative advocates.

Your NAFCM Outreach and Policy Committee encourages NAFCM members to build ongoing relationships with all elected officials - local, state, and federal.  More so, the Committee would like to encourage every member center to reach out and encourage legislators to make referrals of constituent complaints to mediation. Let your legislators get to know your centers and the wonderful services you provide.

Our hope is that this checklist will serve as an inspiration to local centers to work more closely with Local, State and Federal legislators to raise awareness and increase funding to local community mediation centers.

At this time, we are reaching out to our membership requesting your support in sharing samples of documents identified on the checklist (i.e., talking points, evidence base research, sample advocacy letters, fact sheets, legislators meet and greet policies, outreach, media and marketing strategies) used by your organizations to advance the use of community mediation in your local municipality or state.  Those member centers willing to share resources may forward information to the attention of Renata Valree (
