September Letter to the NAFCM Family

NAFCM is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019! To commemorate this milestone, we have released a 25th Anniversary Celebration Handbook where we highlight monthly themes that reflect the breadth of community mediation and provide inspiration for actions you can take in your community. Thank you for sharing with us the exciting work you are doing to date, please keep those pictures and stories coming by sending them to Lori at

In September, the theme is Striving Toward Peace, joining with the United Nations' International Day of Peace on September 21.

Every day, community mediation centers around North America help people fix ruptured bonds or build new links with family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. We help people reframe their issues so that impasses can become paths forward, power imbalances can become shared solutions, and despair can turn to hope. However, we know that such peaceful and just relationships require not only occasional outside intervention, but also constant grooming. To live in such a joyous community, all of us need to tend to it gently but consistently. We each need to do our part, but we are most powerful when we all do it together.

This desire to create and aggregate abundance leads us to the action for the month of September. We've pulled together 21 thoughts about the work of peacebuilders and paired them with a suggested action to build our collective store of peace and justice. You can find these social-media ready images by clicking here

In your center's name, as well as your own, please tweet out the thought and action each day, from September 1 through the International Day of Peace on September 21. In this way, community mediation centers working together across the country can foster the mutual care-taking our communities need to thrive.

Yours in peace,

The NAFCM Strategic Partnerships & Resources Committee
